The Belgian Tervuren (pronounced terv-urine) is a member of the Belgian Shepherd family of dogs. The Belgian Shepherds vary in coat and color, but underneath they are all virtually identical—medium-sized, moderate, prick-eared dogs. Originally an all-purpose sheepherding dog, Belgian Shepherds tend to be very in tune with their person or family, and aware of their environment.
Belgian Tervuren are active, high-energy dogs that excel in a multitude of athletic endeavors including the dogsports of agility, obedience, tracking, flyball, herding, and dock diving. Some Belgian Tervuren, like Pico, come from a long line of dogs that also excel in the sports of schutzhund and ringsport and also real world work like scent detection, search and rescue, and police service.
While the Belgian Tervuren can be an ideal dog for the right home, their quick minds and athletic bodies cannot be denied an outlet of some sort. Whether that is serious hiking or an above-average commitment to training in various dog sports, Belgian Tervuren do best when matched with owners who recognize them as far more than just a pretty face.
