Pico in the Big Apple (and more!)

I’ve been lax about updating Pico’s blog, probably because I want to savor her jumps from Dundee and keep them front and center on this page, but Pico’s done some other stuff than cannot be ignored. After Dundee we competed at the KiKi Classic. Pico had a 25′11″ on Friday and then went to an agility trial on Saturday. I dont think I’ll be doing much AKC agility anymore, after doing so much USDAA I was astonished at the courses, the complaining competitors and the long day of doing basically nothing. But I digress.

We returned to KiKi Classic on Sunday. It was scorching hot but there were gift bags to be won so that drew us back. Pico finished second and looking at the pictures from the event I could see she left early on her jumps. Luckily that’s an easy fix with Pico, I just need to stand closer to the edge of the dock and pray I dont fall in when I throw. I just wish I figured this out BEFORE the competition was over!

In any case, Pico redeemed herself big time in Hamburg. We jumped one wave on Saturday, where she took the lead in the competition, and then enjoyed a fantastic birthday celebration for Kevin Meese. The next day Pico was flying and had a 26′01″ in finals, we passed on jump #2 and in final four she had a 26′6″ and a 26′7″ (or was it a 26′7″ and 26′8″?) I know she bettered her first jump by one inch, not that it mattered!

Two days later it was off to midtown Manhattan for a Dock Dogs/Outdoor Channel demo in Bryant Park! I cannot express how incredible it was to jump Pico in New York City! I also had no idea that busy New Yorkers would have time to stand packed around that pool, cameras and cell phones in hand to take pictures and videos of the dogs. They could not get enough of them! We jumped all day long to hugely enthusiastic crowds.

At World Championships in Hayward WI, the dogs gave “pawtographs” to children mostly. So I was very surprised to see how many adults were standing around waiting for paw prints during the NYC pawtograph sessions. One woman even tracked me down after the competition, because she’d gotten every dog’s pawtograph except Pico’s and she was not leaving without it!

We were treated like kings, or like celebrities by the Outdoor Channel people! We got incredible gift bags and had all our needs catered too! Pico did not want for a thing!

The park was gorgeous, the weather was gorgeous, the crowds were wonderful and nothing is better than spending time with my Dock Dogs friends.  This was a very special day I will never forget!
