Pico spent her 4th of July competing at the Battle Creek Field of Flight Dock Dogs event, where she got a new personal best of 25′9″, two more super elite level jumps AND went on to win the competition!
To think I strongly considered not going to this event! I even stopped on the way there and thought about turning back for home. It just seemed like I had too much to do at home to spend the time in Michigan. Thank god I decided to carry on!
Pico’s weekend actually started at the USDAA Northeastern Regionals. It was a fun, but fruitless competition for us. Pico had some brilliant moments, but only Q’d in one class. Two if you count gamblers, which I dont. My teammates would’ve been justified in shooting us after our snooker run! We did so poorly in the team tournament that we didnt get to run three dog relay, so that gave me plenty of time to get to Michigan. In any case I dont think I’ll go to another regional, the days are just waaaay too long!
Once in Michigan Pico started the competition with a 22′11″ jump, and in the second jump of the wave hit her personal best of 25′9″!! I was sooo excited, because last year it seemed she was stuck at her old PB, with many jumps of 25′2″. I thought we’d never get past that distance!
The next day she gave me heart failure by slipping and cartwheeling off the edge of the dock in practice. She was fine though, and in the third wave she had another huge jump of 25′7″. She went into finals in first place and had a 25 foot jump in final four to cement her win! It was very exciting and nervewracking, because Country, Bo and Mossberg were really breathing down our necks!
I love competing in the mid west, because I really like the people out there. This event was no exception and it was great seeing our old friends again after being away for a pretty long time. I’m not sure when our next event will be, but I hope to get one in before World Championships at the end of July.
